Resources for Phone-Free Maine Schools

The Turn the Tide Coalition is a resource for Maine school boards and school administrators wishing to adopt rules restricting the use of student cell phones and personal electronic devices. We also provide information and resources for parents, teachers and community members, and work with them to help establish phone-free schools in their local districts.

The below resources are specifically designed to help schools engage all stakeholders, minimize push-back, and facilitate a smooth transition to a phone-free school environment. With the growing recognition of the negative impact of smartphones on education and mental health, these resources provide necessary support to make impactful changes in our schools.

About our statewide effort

LD 1234 is a statewide bill, to be voted by the Maine legislature in June 2025, that will require that school boards adopt rules restricting the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices by students, supporting learning and mental health for students in the state of Maine.

“Schools should ensure that classroom learning and social time are phone-free experiences.”

-US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, in the the New York Times, June 17, 2024

Our goal is to ban student cell phone use in all public schools in the state of Maine.

Because every Maine student, regardless of zip code, deserves a focused, phone-free school day.
